Madras University is one of the oldest institutions in India. In the age of distance education, how can the University lag behind in spreading its wings? Keeping this in mind, Madras University Distance Education was incepted in the year 1981. It holds the pride of being the first directorate for distance learning in the state of Tamil Nadu. Since its inception, the directorate has invested heavily in providing quality distance education to needy students. The learning process consists of self learning through audio, video lessons and regular broadcast of lessons through online or radio (Prasar Bharti). Currently, Madras University Distance Education conducts 26 Under Graduate, 24 Post Graduate, 17 Professional, 25 Diploma and 13 Certificate courses. 

The institute of distance education is also known as IDE and offers a wide range of courses in arts, commerce, business management, languages, information technology, computer applications, mathematics and many more. It has study centers, online institutes, spot admission centers, participatory institutes and study centers. It also has a overseas students grievance cell for international students. The courses are also eligible for state government and central government employees. You can avail the application forms form the various centers and study centers or download online application forms from the university website. The brochure for IDE gives all the information about fee structure, courses, timetables, examinations, eligibility and method of instructions and personal contact programs.

Admissions to Madras University Distance Education are made throughout the year for all 78 Programmes in two streams namely Academic Year Admissions and Calendar Year Admissions. The Institute of Distance Education - IDE University of Madras is providing quality study materials in Self Learning Format to the students.

  Admission Procedure:-

• All the courses of the Institute are offered to the residents of India and also to foreign countries as per the discretion of the authorities, University of Madras. Admission cannot be claimed as a matter of right and the Institute reserves to itself the right of admission.
• Spot Admission will be made for those who come to the Institute / Spot Admission Centres / Study Centres in person along with the required original documents / certificates, in addition to a fee paid challan endorsed by the BANK or a demand draft infavour of The Director, IDE, University of Madras payable at Chennai for Rs.80/- towards Registration Fee.

MBA:- Educational Management, Marketing Management, Financial Management, Systems Management, Human Resource Management, Hospital Management, International Business Management, Operations Management, Apparel Management, Travel and Tourism Management

Eligibility:- Graduation in any discipline.

M.A. – ENGLISH:-

Eligibility:-:Candidates who have passed the B.A. Degree Examination offering English as the Main Subject of study under Part-III Core Course [or] B.A. / B.Sc. Degree Examinations under Part-I [or] Part-II Foundation Courses Paper-I and Paper-II of this University [REGULAR STREAM / OUS] [or] any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto by this University are eligible for admission.

M.Com:-

Eligibility:- Candidates who have passed the B.Com. Commerce, Bank Management, Co-operation, Corporate Secretaryship, Computer Applications, B.A. Industrial Organisation, Co-operation, B.B.A., B.B.M., B.C.S. and B.Sc. Mathematics [or] B.A. Economics [or] B.Sc. Computer Science [or] B.C.A. with any two Core - Main papers offered in the B.Com. Degree Course are eligible for admission.

M.Sc. – CHEMISTRY

Eligibility:- Candidates who have passed the B.Sc. Degree Examination with Chemistry as the main subject of study of this University or an examination of some other Universities accepted by the University of Madras as equivalent thereto shall be eligible for admission to the M.Sc. Degree Course in Chemistry.
