About Huron University College

Maclean's University Student Issue (February 2009) suggests that smaller schools excel compared to larger universities and recent surveys seem to support this conclusion, with Huron University College scoring at or near the top in over half of the categories reported by Maclean's.

Huron scored first in two categories:

    * First out of 53 Canadian universities for a Supportive Campus Environment.
    * First in the senior-students category "How would you evaluate your entire educational experience at this institution?" Most institutions' scores declined from first to fourth year in this category.

Huron also performed well in the following categories:

    * 2nd in the senior-students' response to "If you could start over, would you go to the institution you are now attending?" (1st of all Ontario universities)
    * 3rd in Student-Faculty Interaction (1st of all Ontario universities)
    * 6th in the Level of Academic Challenge (2nd of all Ontario universities)
    * 7th in Enriching Educational Experience (2nd of all Ontario universities)

Huron's results were based on its performance in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), in which 53 Canadian universities, including all those in Ontario, participated. The Maclean's University Student issue also reports results from the 2008 Canadian Undergraduate Survey Consortium (CUSC) survey of 31 university campuses, in which Huron did not take part.

Huron University College, comprises of a small student population of about 1,200 students which helps Huron maintain its distinct identity, giving students the advantages of small classes, personal attention and a friendly community.

The class size and approach to teaching at Huron provides an interactive experience where students are actively engaged in classroom discussion and have a rapport with the faculty starting in first year; as compared to a more passive learning style in large lecture hall.

Huron attracts professors who wish to excel at both research and teaching. As such, they take a keen interest in the scholarly pursuits of the students in their classrooms. Huron classes are taught by professors with PhDs.
